System State Backup interrupted on Windows 2008 r2 - Access is Denied

Hello,

I am working on Windows Server 2008 r2, trying to perform a System State Backup.  After configuring the System State Backup and in the middle of the process, this is interrupted with the an Access is Denied error.

Here are more details: I configure a Shared Network Folder with the right privileges to store the Backup. The size of the Backup is estimated at 8 GB. There is more than enough space in the Shared Network Folder to store the backup. After having completed almost 1 GB, the process is interrupted with the following error message:

Error en la copia de seguridad de C:\Windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft-windows-t..tional-chinese-dayi_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7600.16385_none_6052679946eea92d\TableTextServiceDaYi.txt durante la escritura: error [0x80070005] Acceso denegado.

Translation:

Error in the security copy of C:\Windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft-windows-t..tional-chinese-dayi_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7600.16385_none_6052679946eea92d\TableTextServiceDaYi.txt during writing: error [0x80070005] Access is Denied.

I will appreciate if someone can shed some light into what might be the cause that the backup cannot be completed successfully.

Take care,

Server 2012 Server backups - "The drive cannot find the sector requested"

Hi please help, Windows Server backup keeps failing with an error "The drive cannot find the sector requested", I am doing a full backup to an external drive which has been dedicated for backups, it does about 94.6gb out of 95gb so is close to finishing. I have performed a check disk, updated all my hardware drivers (its a HP server with hardware mirrored drives), I am at a loss - does anyone have any ideas or solutions.

I have uninstalled and rebooted the server and then reinstalled but still get the same error

Also must add that this is a live server, oh and is my first server 2012 install (soon to be last!!)

Can I copy windows server backup files to another location?

I am new to using the Windows Server Backup tool.  I've got Server 2008 R2 Standard with multiple virtual machines running on it.  I need to make sure the server and virtual machines are properly backed up for potential recovery later.

1.  Will Windows Server Backup properly backup the virtual machines so they can later be recovered?

2.  Can the backup files be copied to an alternate location somehow from their original location so I can keep a copy of the backup files off-site?  (So far from what I've read, this doesn't seem like an option, but most of the posts I've come across are a couple years old.)

Thanks for the assistance.

SCSI hard drives and Server 2K8 Backup

I'm using a SCSI hard drive in one of our servers and I've been seeing Bad Block errors in the Event Log but HDD's can work for years on a bad block but when I try to backup the drive I get a message saying "The file or directory is corrupted or unreadable is it that 2K8 doesn't support SCSI? or is the drive that far gone? I can still access it and browse the data, So I need to know so I can justify getting a new HDD and preferably not SCSI.

The Volume Shadow Copy operation failed with Error 0x800423F3

Hello.

I have setup Windows Backup in my 2008 SBS environment to ensure an additional backup as well as my Backup Exec schedule. All was working fine until the other day and now each night the Windows Server backup fails with the following error:

The Volume Shadow Copy operation failed with Error 0x800423F3

From the event logs I can see:

1. (Information Event) VSS Writer: prepare for the backup

2. (Information Event) ESENT: lsass Shadow Copy instance starting:  Full Shadow Copy

3. (Information Event) ESENT: certsrv Shadow Copy instance starting:  Full Shadow Copy

4. (Information Event) ESENT: svchost Shadow Copy instance starting:  Full Shadow Copy

5. (Information Event) ESE: starting Shadow Copy instance

6. (Information Event) MSExchangeIS: Exchange VSS Writer successfully prepared the Database Engine for a full backup (for each Storage Group)

7. (Information Event) MSExchangeIS: Prepared for Snapshot successfully

8. (Information Event) MSSQ$MICROSOFT##SSEE (unsure if this is relevant): The description for Event ID 17137 from source  MSSQ$MICROSOFT##SSEE cannot be found.

9. (Information Event) ESENT: svchost Shadow Copy instance freeze started

10. ESE (Information Event): Information Store, Shadow Copy instance freeze started

11. ESENT (ERROR): svchost Shadow Copy instance aborted

Other events include:

VSS (Information Event): Ran out of time while expanding file specification

ESE (ERROR): Information Store Shadow Copy aborted

ESENT: (Information Event): The database engine began replaying log file

The logs then continue almost identical for each Storage Group.

I checked the status of Microsoft Exchange Writer in VSSAdmin and it says Last Error: Timed Out.

As I said it has been working fine up until a few days ago. Nothing has changed without our SBS environment.

Any help would be appreciated as I am a bit lost when it comes to VSS.

Kind Regards

Dan Hargrove

Dear All,

i've checked today the server back-up and found this error :

The backup operation that started at '‎2013‎-‎05‎-‎24T12:57:19.226666500Z' has failed with following error code '0x80070020' (The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.). Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.

SBS 2008. Windows Backup is giving me these messages regularly.

I have listed the shadow copies and tried to remove the oldest with:vssadmin delete shadows /for=k:  /oldest

I get response "No items found that satisfy that query". Any advice appreciated.

Also, how do I change the threshold for that warning?

Windows Backup fails: not enough free space, but there is plenty

System: C:\ 120GB SSD Drive, 40GB free

D: 1.5 TB regular SATA drive, 682GB free

Trying to run windows backup, only options chosen are "Let me choose -> Include system image", all other check boxes unchecked.

Destination, network drive with 800 GB free.

Backup fails almost immediately with "The disk  that your backups are being saved on doesn't have enough free space."  I just want my basic system image with drivers etc backed up so I can recover quickly, all my data is backed up remotely.

System State Backup does not work. "system writer is not found in the backup". "vssadmin list writers" does not list the system writer

This same error has been appearing in forums for about 5 years now!  Resolutions vary from altering permissions on folders as described in this article:-  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2009272   and theres even a solution which involves performing an in-place upgrade like this:-

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/windowsbackup/thread/5a637292-fca7-4b8b-94a3-cbceda96d58e

I have nothing wrong with the permissions under c:\windows\winsxs

The cryptsvc stops and starts successfully but the system writer still does not appear in the list from vssadmin list writers.

This means I can not backup the system state.  "wbadmin start systemstatebackup -backuptarget:d:   also fails.

Since the problem is not fixed by the permissions changes and service restarts, the only other option appears to be an in-place upgrade.

Since I have WindowsServer-2012 fully patched and the problem appears to have been successfully ported over theres nothing to upgrade to.

How do I get out of this situation?

Windows Server Regback directory files failing? Commvault

I use Simpana CommVault. I've got a few WS 2008 R2 servers that constantly receive these failed items in our Backup Summary Reports

[C:\Windows\System32\config\RegBack\DEFAULT] Cannot create a file when that file already exists.
[C:\Windows\System32\config\RegBack\SAM] Cannot create a file when that file already exists.
[C:\Windows\System32\config\RegBack\SECURITY] Cannot create a file when that file already exists.
[C:\Windows\System32\config\RegBack\SOFTWARE] Cannot create a file when that file already exists.
[C:\Windows\System32\config\RegBack\SYSTEM] Cannot create a file when that file already exists.

We have VSS enabled for System State backups for each of these servers. Is it necessary to back these RegBack files up? Or can we filter/exclude these out safely? I've seen only one person in a forum ever say that excluding these was okay.

Can anyone please shed some light on this?

what's the best practice on Active Directory backup plan

$

Dear all,

as we know, before Windows Server 2008 , Windows backup tool is very good and easy to use.

but since Windows Server 2008, the Windows Server backup tool's function is very simple, we cannot select full backup, difference backup or incremental backup method. and we cannot only backup the system state data in GUI in WinSvr 08, and we cannot define the backup shedule such as use full backup every week and diffence backup everyday.

in short, I don't think the windows server backup tool is useful to backup the Active Directory. and I don't think use System Center Data Protection Manager is a good solution, because it's too big and expansive if use SCDPM for AD only.

So, dear guy, would you please tell me how do you backup your AD is actural practice.

BTW, one of my customer use Windows Server 2008 SP2 (not R2) as their DC , they don't want upgrade them now. and they want me give them guide about the DC backup and restore . would you please give me some advice and suggestion.

Thank you

Windows Server 2012 - code '0x80780102' (The system writer is not found in the backup.)

I'm having an issue backing up. The system writer is not available and I've tried all the previous solutions such as (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2009272) as well as others on here, setting the permissions etc. but the system writer never appears under 'vssadmin list writers'

It seems this issue has been around for many years on previous version. Is there a solution? I've spent days on this so far.

Many thanks,

Failed Items - AppData and ServiceProfiles directories

Hello,
For a few of our Windows Servers we are seeing various failed items in our backup reports. Mostly, these are .dat.LOG files and .dat files. Below are some of the failed items from the log. Can anybody please provide some suggestions on whether or not I can filter some of this stuff out safely / add exclusions? These servers are not using VSS for their file backups, but ARE using VSS for system state backups. WS 2008 R2.

First W2K12 install, so, learning. W2K12 running in guest W2K8R2 Hyper-V. See error below. Been occuring since install, several events recorded within same 15 minute period each day, before and after joined to domain. Bing/Google searches and Event ID turned up no info. Quesrions:

  1. Why are online backups not enabled by default? (what if this were an Exchange or AD machine, for example)
  2. Where can I read up on scoped snapshots (again, searching yielded no info)
  3. In what scenarios should I leave scoped snapshots disabled? In what scenarios should I enable?

incidentally, this particular vm will be for SQL 2012 Enterprise. Followed immediately by a SharePoint 2013 vm also running W2K12.

Restoring backed up files from 2012 Server to 2008 Server R2

$
0
0

Hello-

We've recently installed a 2012 Standard server that we want to use as a file/profile server, and are backing up to external hard drives. Since the drives are bit-locked, we have the external drives assigned to drive letters, which are then dedicated to the backup process.

Backups to and recoveries from the drives work perfectly on the 2012 box.

Since this is the only 2012 machine in our enterprise currently, we want to make sure we can recover user files and profiles in the event of a loss.

I have the Bitlocker feature installed on a 2008 R2 server and am unable to unlock the drive. However, when I attempt to restore from the backup, the machine provides the following error:

"The system global catalog is corrupted."

I know the catalog is not corrupted, because I can immediately plug it back in to 2012 and recover from it.

If I plug the drive into Windows 7 Pro, the system will prompt me to unlock it with Bitlocker. However, once that's done the backup software won't recognize the disk as a backup location.

So, the question comes down to whether there is a way to restore this backup on any other OS besides 2012? Is there a setting I need to enable on 2012 to allow a legacy OS to use the backup? A feature on 2008 that would allow restoring backups from future OSes?

Any ideas are welcome, and my apologies if this has an easy solution. No amount of keyword searching got me to what I wanted.

Thank you!
