Is there a way to clear more than a single backup at a time from the "Backup and Restore" utility?

$

I'm using the built-in "Backup and Restore" utility to back up my Library to an external drive. At some point the external drive becomes full and the backing up process silently fails. So I'm assuming that I need to free up some space.

My question is how do I delete more than one backup at a time, because I have like 100+ of them in the list?

Disk set as active in BIOS is too small

I have a server running Windows Server 2012 R2. I had two non-RAID 2TB hard drives; C drive had the OS and D drive was empty. I did a full system backup with Windows Server Backup and created a system image, WITHOUT including D drive. The size of backup image was approximately 1.2TB.

I created RAID 1 for the same two drives. I have about 1.8TB free on the C drive. I wanted to restore the system from backup image so I did a boot from Windows installation disc, went to Repair computer -> Troubleshoot -> Restore from system image. I get the error the disk that's active in BIOS is too small!

It is the same drive that had the OS before I took a backup. I have 1.8TB free on the hard drive after RAID and the backup image size is 1.2TB. How is this error possible?!

Any help on fixing this will be great. Thanks!

Windows Server Backup , multiple iScsi target

Hello,

I have a 2 virtual Windows servers (one SBS2011 and one 2008) that I would like to backup on two Qnap NAS. (one is located in the room than the servers and teh other one is in another building)

I have created and setup two iScsi targets on each NAS and mounted them on both servers (each servers has now a disk mounted on each NAS)

I then configured Windows server backup with multiple target and I was hoping the backup will rotate from one backup disk to the other.

The backup run fine, but it always goes to the same disk.

Is there  way to configure windows server backup so that he use both target disk?

Thanks in advance for your help,

Server Backup Failure (Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials)

This seems to be a problem that has come up before in these forums - I have been through several threads and none of the suggestions have helped fix server backup.

I am trying to perform a System State and C: backup (for Bare Metal Recovery) - backup is to a local drive (so not a NAS or a Network Share). Server Backup used to work but stopped sometime around the time I switched the backup drive (which was running out of space).

Backup fails both from the scheduled Server Essentials Dashboard and also manually using wbadmin. For example:

wbadmin start backup -backuptarget:P: -include:c: -allcritical -vssfull -quiet > "c:\Temp\Server Backup.log"

Gives the following output:

wbadmin 1.0 - Backup command-line tool

Backup of volume \\?\Volume{c05750d2-1c50-11e3-80b1-806e6f6e6963}\ has failed. The specified backup disk cannot be found.

I think underlying this is a VSS problem but I can't spot anything amiss using vssadmin. (vssadmin list writers shows 'No Errors' against each entry).

Looking at the Event Log, there are no entries shown against VSS (as Source) under Backup (as Source), the following error is shown:

The backup operation that started at '‎2015‎-‎08‎-‎23T00:30:21.834712600Z' has failed with following error code '0x807800C5' (There was a failure in preparing the backup image of one of the volumes in the backup set.). Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.

I'm stumped - I've spent 3 or 4 days trying to crack this and am no further forward. Any help or suggestions would be really appreciated.

Windows 2012 Server Backup Delet the Old backups

HI

Recently I have moved to this new server environment, I am using windows backup 2012 for taking the backup of my exchange 2013.

1. every week I use to take full backup of exchange ( Apps folder, Logs & Database).  around 400Gb size of backup on 2TB hard disk (external USB).

2. today I notice that my hard disk size remain same after the first full backup & there is slight difference in the server backup size and the backup available on hard disk.

3. I also noticed that I cannot find the old full backups that I took before, only I can see today's backup.

4. i tired to see the log history of backup it's showing the old backups date and time with successful option

How can i get the old backups, did i do something wrong in taking the backups,  or how can i set weekly full backup.

so that i can have each week 400Gb backups for each week.

Thank you

4TB RAID5 backup fails to network storage

$

I have a freshly built and fully updated Server 2012 R2 Standard GUI 3.62TB GPT RAID 5 (3x2TB +1HS). It is currently just setup as a base configuration with no Domain, DNS or DHCP configured, no major apps loaded and no databases. The only role that is loaded is Hyper-V. I would like to make a backup to my network share (UNC Path \\server\shared folder) (also server 2012 R2) as I have done with many previous builds. Those previous builds were also RAID 5 configurations on the same hardware, but with 3x1TB they fell below the 2TB MBR limit and thus were formatted as such. The actual data portion of the source server is 32.3GB and the destination network drive has 1.32TB of free space. The destination share is also formatted GPT. Both source and destination report as 512e (fsutil fsinfo ntfsinfo x:). When I attempt to back up it fails because VSS does not have enough space to create the shadow copy.  That would seem to suggest that my source is where the problem is. To that I would concur since it is the only thing that is different from my previous successes. The source drive has a 3.63 system partition, 300MB Recovery partition, a 99MB EFI Sytem Partition, and a 128MB Reserved partition (hidden).

Why is VSS failing? Event Log error code 0x80780119. Do I need alter the size of one of the unlettered partitions?

Thank you in advance.

PS: This same failure occurs on a 2x4TB RAID 1 build I am testing right next to it. So the commonality here is that both source systems are Svr 12R2 Standard GUI with no roles or apps (other than Hyper-V), w/ 4TB RAID arrays formatted GPT trying to do a server backup to a UNC path on the same destination server.

Scheduled Backup not running consistently

Using Windows Server Backup I setup a scheduled backup on Server 2008 running Exchange 2007.  It ran as scheduled until 5 days ago, when it stopped running in its entirety until this morning.

There is a gap in Windows Server Backup between these dates. The backups do not fail as they do not run at all. Although each day in WSB the backup says it is scheduled for that day.

In the Scheduled task for the backup there are no notifications between the 9th and the 14th.

When the task has started today it seems that it has attempted to run the task several times. Which resulted in a number of failures.

I have followed the step to change the task limit within the registry in this other technet post to no success.

Windows Server 2012 Backup NOT RESPONDING

Sometimes, the Windows Server backup hangs at about mid-way through the entire backup process. Either manual or scheduled backup. It doesn't appear "frozen" as everything else seems to respond when clicked on. What seems confusing is that sometimes it works. I do not do anything else on the system as it is only used as database server via Hyper-V where database files are accessed in the guest OS of the virtual machine.

Current setup:

Dell PowerEdge T110 Tower

Intel Xeon E3-1220 v2 3.10Ghz

4GB DDR3 RAM

Windows Server 2012 + HP Ultrium LTO-6 + LTFS = strange copy behaviour

Hi all,

I'm struggling to get my head around an issue we've encountered, so thought I'd ask here!

We use a Quantum Scalar i40 robot with a HP Ultrium LTO-6 fibre channel attached drive. This is attached to a Qlogic QLE2562 8 Gb/s FC card on a host.

We first started noticing something strange when copying (using Windows 2012 R2 Standard Explorer copy/paste) from the host storage to the LTO-6 drive. When trying to archive a large amount of files (image sequences) we would sometimes get an error “File IMG123456.dpx already exists, do you wish to replace or skip?”. If we clicked Replace or Skip, the same outcome, the file would not be present on the tape. Initially, we would re-format the tape and copy the entire data again, but the same error, on the same file would appear. We think we have got around this by copying the missing frame to the parent directory and ‘moving’ the file into the image sequence.

However, the problem that has led to this post is the reverse; copying from an LTO-6 tape to our storage. We copied an entire tape and informed our colleagues that the data was online for them to view. Upon viewing the image sequence copied off the tape, we noticed that a frame e.g. IMG100001.dpx was actually frame IMG100002.dpx. However IMG100002.dpx would remain the same.

We told the supplier that the data was corrupt. We returned the LTO to them for further checks. They informed us the data on the LTO was OK and the data on their SAN was OK. We received the same LTO back from them and copied the frame IMG100001.dpx (initially wrong) by itself and the frame was OK. We then copied the entire contents of the tape again and the same thing happened. The same frame was replaced by IMG100002.dpx.

I don’t know is this is a Windows bug or an HP StoreOpen LTFS bug. I've raised a ticket with HP but they've in turn told me to raise a ticket with Microsoft.

Wondering if anyone else has experienced this?

Printer server backup.

Hello all,

I just recently installed our companies first print server on a server 2012 r2 box. Now that everything is up and running I need to find a way to backup the server incase it decides to bomb out.

My Director wants me to  attempt a backup of the server on a desktop computer using software like AppAssure. I have been scouring the internet trying to find out if this is even possible but have come up empty handed.

I just need something that I can periodically back up the server onto and will be able to be plugged it in in the case the printer server fails and use this as the temporary print server until I can repair the primary server.

Any help you guys could share with me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

My box consist of a C: and D: partition it throws and error at the exact same backup stage on both volumes. Can't shrink/extend the C: but did it on the D: one time was extending it by 400mb and then I just shrunk it by 10mb per some other suggestions but did not fix the issue of either backups. Any suggestions on how else to troubleshoot this issue?

WSB 2012 R2 Deleting All Backups When Disk Fills Up

$

I installed a dedicated disk in a Windows Server 2012 R2 server and configured Windows Server Backup to use it.  This works great until the disk fills up.  When it does, an error is logged "The shadow copies of volume \\?\Volume<GUID> were deleted because the shadow copy storage could not grow in time. Consider reducing the IO load on the system or choose a shadow copy storage volume that is not being shadow copied."

I've read that when the disk fills up, WSB is supposed to delete the oldest backup and continue, but it is deleting everything and starting over.

I've seen other posts indicating that this behavior was observed in Windows Server 2008 R2, but is broken in 2012+.  Is there some way to get automatic retention working in 2012 R2?
