Windows Server Backup 'Warning' Email Notifications

$

H Everyone,

I have configured 'Failure' Email Notifications for Windows Server Backup on our 2012 R2 Server but I'm having issues trying to configure different notifications for 'Success' and 'Warning' status. An example:

- Windows Server Backup ends with a warning status "Completed with warnings". When I check Event Viewer to try to determine what Event ID I can have as a trigger I can't seem to find any specifically related to the backup's 'Warning' status.

Looking at the 'Windows Logs\Application' area there are 'Information' events at the time of the backup completing but those IDs also show up for 'Failure' backups as well (and some of them are present for 'Success' backups even).

The 'Failure' notifications use Events logged in 'Applications and Services Logs\Microsoft\Windows\Backup\Operational' log but looking at the Event IDs for Successful and Warning backups, they are the same.

Does anyone know of Event IDs, maybe logged somewhere else deep in the Event Viewer, that I can use to differentiate between these two backup completion status'?

This server in particular is doing a full backup of itself (System Reserved, C:, a Hyper-V Server and it's Host Component, Bare metal recovery, System state) to a dedicated external HDD...

...BUT I'm also trying to setup these notifications on systems that are only doing 'Bare metal' backups (includes: System, C:, Bare metal recovery, System state) to NAS so I'd need Event IDs for those 'Success' and 'Warning' backups as well (if they are different).

If more information is required I can provide as necessary. Any help on this would be appreciated. Thanks.

Bare Metal restore from a physical Windows 2008 R2 Server to a Virtual Machine

Hello,

I originally posted this question in the General forum but was recommended to post here instead, so here goes:

I am having problems trying to test a DR bare metal restore of a physical Windows 2008 R2 Server to a Vmware Virtual machine. For DR recovery testing reasons. We have successfully used this process for recovering Server 2003 servers but are having no luck with carrying out the procedure from a windows 2008 R2 Server.

We use Arcserve for our backups which do a simple volume and system state backup and I am using this for the restore testing. It would be difficult for me to move backup solutions as we have many servers.

What happens is I build a Virtual Windows 2008 Server with the same Service Pack and Volume sizes as the physical server I want to restore, carry out a restore volumes and System state (I can successfully use this procedure for 2003 Servers)

On restarting the VM I get:

“Windows failed to Start” 0x00000e The boot selection failed because a required device in inaccessible

I have tried loading the command prompt from the repair option and doing the following:

Using Bootrec / RebuildBCD, Bootrec  /FixMBR, Bootrec /Fixxboot

Using sfc / scannow

I have also tried using bcedit to set the boot manager and boot loader locations all with no luck.

I have also tried this tip from Mark Minasi:
1.Have a file level and system state backup performed with your backup software ( NetBackup was used) of the physical box
2.Build a new 2008 R2 VM using default hardware  and name it the same as the box you are restoring (make sure to have VMtools installed)
3.Perform a file level restore from your backup solution to the new VM
4.Perform a system state restore to the server
5.Reboot to Windows Recovery CD
6.Cancel Auto repair if it starts
7.Click “Command Prompt Link”
8.Type regedit and press enter
9.Single click HKLM
10.Click File>Load Hive
11.Navigate to D:\Windows\System32\Config
12.Double Click System
13.Type VMRestore as key name
14.Navigate to HLKM\VMRestore\ControlSet001\Services\LSI_SAS
15.Right click the Start key and click Modify
16.Change Value Data: to 0 and click OK
17.Highlight the HKLM\VMRestore click single clicking on VMRestore in the tree structure
18.Click File>Unload Hive>Yes
19.Exit Registry Editor
20.Exit command prompt
21.Click Restart
22.You should now boot into the OS.

So far what ever I do does not seem to resolve the issue. Any advice or pointers to articles would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Andy

Why do I Need Shadow Copies of my Backup Volume?

$

I am backing up to a mounted iSCSI drive. The drive is dedicated to server backups My question is why do I need to have ANY space devoted to shadow copies on this volume? Making shadow copies of the backups means I'm making shadow copies of the shadow copies on the server drives, doesn't it? What purpose does this serve, and can I disable this behavior?

Windows 2008 Bare Metal Recovery Issues

I had restored BMR on HP Proliant DL380 G6  having 3X 300GB Raid 5 server, this was done by using win 2008 setup disc & selecting repair option, the restore goes sucessful, but i am not able to boot the server because after restoring i can see system reserved partition has take c: drive which had boot loader files, while my actual C: is now D:, D: drive is E: & E: drive is F:

I tried diskpart utility to change the drive letter & making the partition active, but when i restart the server again with win2008 setup disc , i see changes have reverted back & gives boot loader missing

Can some one help me as this is my domain controller with imp application running on it.

Thanks

Manoj

Searched around and have seen others with this issue but no real solutions.

I have a 14TB Deduplicated volume that loses its vss about once a month. I just lost this lasts night and have seen some interesting stuff.

First the error

The shadow copies of volume E: were deleted because the shadow copy storage could not grow in time.

Consider reducing the IO load on the system or choose a shadow copy storage volume that is not being shadow copied.

PS C:\Windows\system32> vssadmin list shadowstorage /for=e:

vssadmin 1.1 - Volume Shadow Copy Service administrative command-line tool(C) Copyright 2001-2012 Microsoft Corp.Shadow Copy Storage association

For volume: (E:)\\?\Volume{9b6bb5ae-8d5e-4f13-94ac-8655fc90e4f2}\

Shadow Copy Storage volume: (E:)\\?\Volume{9b6bb5ae-8d5e-4f13-94ac-8655fc90e4f2}\

Used Shadow Copy Storage space: 507 MB (0%)

Allocated Shadow Copy Storage space: 3.14 GB (0%)

Maximum Shadow Copy Storage space: 1.40 TB (9%)

If i look at previous versions i only show the snapshot from this morning at 7:00 AM

However if i type vssadmin list shadows. it shows 30+ Contents of shadow copy set ID.

I am starting to run low on space but i still have over 20% free and over 3.1TB of space.

Any ideas here?

On Win 2012 r2 from few weeks i have a strange issue.

Every second backup end after about 1 minute with message "more data is available"

Reconfigured backup from scratch - the same error. Reformatted usb disk - no change.

I've no idea. I can't find any valuable info in logs. When i start backup manually from console - everything is ok.

Server is up to date, restarted. Nothing helps.

Maybe someone can help ?

BMR on Windows Server 2012R2 to ALMOST identical HW (Driver issue)

$

OK, we all know that BMR is really intended for restore on identical HW.  For reasons that some of you may know, I need to migrate from a Dell server with a PERC S130 to the same HW but using a real RAID card, say a PERC H330.  Here's what I tried:

a) Did a BMR backup to an external drive

b) Removed the old drives and old RAID controller

c) Inserted brand spanking new drives and the new RAID controller

d) Restored

Restore went well, but got the proverbial blue screen of death.  I realized that there is probably a driver issue at hand, but not certain as the restore proceeded -- that is, the restore wrote onto the new disk array.

In any case, I have two ideas in my head:

a) Try putting the NEW RAID controller in the box without any drives connected to it while running on the old RAID.  Hopefully Windows will detect new HW and either load a driver or ask to have a driver loaded (which I have).  After that, do the BMR backup, remove the old RAID, swap in the new RAID and drives and hopefully, the restore image will have the right drivers.

b) Just install the driver for the new RAID while running on the old RAID (not bothering with actually installing the HW), then doing the BMR backup, and so forth.

Before blowing another few hours on this, any words of wisdom?

Ken

VSS_E_VOLUME_NOT_SUPPORTED_BY_PROVIDER is returned by VSS without calling "AreLunsSupported" method.

Hi,

We have written a VSS hardware provider. Which is working fine. However we are facing a strange issue with one particular server. VSS snapshot creations is always failing with "VSS_E_VOLUME_NOT_SUPPORTED_BY_PROVIDER". But the VSS service is not invoking "AreLunnsSupported" function. The server has simple configuration.

- Windows 2008Rs SP1

- It has only one disk.

- When we are calling "AddToSnapshotSet" on the system reserved partition, we are facing this issue.

- It has only NTFS volumes.

Is there any way VSS can return error without consulting the provider ? We are passing our provider GUID to "AddToSnapshotSet". But still VSS service is not contacting the provider.

Appreciate any help! Thanks.

Hi,

I am going to run a BMR on a VM in hyper-V (OS drive on a big fileserver). I made a similar VM. Same size OS disk. When attempting to run the restore i get an error as in the picture below:

Not enough storage is available to complete this operation. So i added 10GB more than the original server OS disk. Same error. So i double the disk size. Same error. Anyone that have seen this before?

Hi Folks,

Recently I have tried to move Windows Server 2008R2 from a Dell Dimension C521 to a Dell Optiplex 960, by the technique of a bare-metal restore of a backup of the C521 to the blank disk on the 960. This creates a disk in the 960 which is ostensibly an identical copy of the disk in the C521.

The restore was successful, but yielded a non-functioning system. Specifically, the 960 boots to where the pulsating Windows Flag logo displays, which is normally followed by narration on the screen of the steps Windows Server 2008R2 is taking to start services, but in this case, I don't get that far; I only see the mouse cursor on the screen and that is persistent for at least half an hour, after which time I aborted the experiment. This disk behaves the same way in either a Dimension C521 box or an Optiplex 960, so it doesn't seem to be related to the processor.

So, my problem is to determine why a re-imaged disk behaves the way mine does and if there is a technique to successfully boot it. What diagnostics and repair tools are available?

Thanks for the help,

Chris.

Windows 2008R2 System State backup problem

I am having an issue trying to backup the system state on a few Windows 2008 R2 servers. When I run the wbadmin start systemstatebackup -backuptarget:\\server\share it dies right at the beginning of checking the files to back up. It states "the parameter is incorrect" and to check the error log. When I do look in the log file it is blank. When I look in the Windows application log it gives an error 2155347997. Tried everything I could think of.
