AD Backup

Hi,

We have four Active Directory VMs in the environment. To schedule AD backup to backup system state etc via Windows Server Backup, it is per AD VM backup, not per domain, is this correct?

Does this mean we have to have a AD backup job on each of the AD VM?

There are Azure VMs running OS: WS 2012 R2

Thank you

Over 1000 Files/Folders - Error/Limitation?? Tedious Restore Ahead?

Hello everyone,

For years I've been telling my client that he needs to invest in a better backup solution other than Windows Server Backup.  This weekend I found out why, and it was something I did not know beforehand.  Upon his server crashing, he had a WD backup drive (an older one) that we used to perform weekly backups to that had basically all of the files and folders on his server backed up to.  He uses a sophisticated tax program, as he is an accountant.  Inside one of the folders of this program where his tax data for all of his clients is stored, there were a few hundred folders.  Well, I went to restore the main folder of this program which had the few hundred subdirectories under it.  Upon starting the restoration, it came up with a message/error that stated something to the effect that this folder has more than 1000 files/folders under it and that Windows Server Backup was limited to restoring 1000 files/folders at a time and nothing more.  The question I have is, am i really going to have to restore this data folder by folder?  Is there any way around this with the backup that we have here?  It is scary to think that I may have to literally go through the 10 step restore wizard in Windows Server Backup for 100's of folders and do each restoration individually.  Also, why would Microsoft create a backup solution for a server that has this limitation??

Windows Server Backup - Running Backup on both Hyper-V and Hyper-V VMs at the same time

Hi,

I have this scenario which I need clarifications.

My environment:
Hyper-V host running Windows Server backup for my VMs.
My VMs have Windows server backup installed in them and running as well.

My question is, if my Hyper-V host is doing a backup, and my VMs are also doing a backup at the same time, will there be a conflict?

Has anyone attempted this before and if this safe to do so?

Thanks for the help.

Windows Server Backup - Retryable Error for Hyper-V

$

Hi,

Recently when I'm trying to do a Windows server backup of my Hyper-V VMs, there are transient error failures during the backup attempt. The strange thing is that in the past, Windows server backup has always worked for me.

In vss admin list writers, the Hyper-V writer states retryable error.

If I restart the vmms service, sometimes the backup is successful, other times it still continues to fail. Other workarounds I have attempted are shutting down my VMs and restarting the Windows server backup - again this does not work all the time and I have to repeat such steps to get the backup to succeed.

Are there any ways that I can trace or troubleshoot why the backup is failing?

Thanks for the help.

I have a new Dell R710 that I have 2008 Server R2 64-bit installed. It's role is file server. I first noticed there were VSS initialization issues in BackupExec and that the system state wasn't getting backed up.

Then I would run "vssadmin list writers" from CMD and system writer would be timing out....

I would also get Event ID 12289 Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error DeviceIoControl(\\?\Volume{caaccaea-2a96-11e1-b14b-806e6f6e6963} - 0000000000000140,0x0053c020,00000000003BDFD0,0,00000000003BBFA0,4096,[0]).  hr = 0x80070057, The parameter is incorrect.

I would also get Event ID 12293 Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Error calling a routine on a Shadow Copy Provider {b5946137-7b9f-4925-af80-51abd60b20d5}. Routine details IVssSnapshotProvider::IsVolumeSupported() failed with 0x8000ffff [hr = 0x8000ffff, Catastrophic failure

Also event ID 22 for volsnap The shadow copy storage volume specified for shadow copies on volume\\?\Volume{caaccaea-2a96-11e1-b14b-806e6f6e6963} could not be added.

Also I can't configure shadow copies due to error 0x8004230f "Failed to retrieve volumes that are eligible for shadow copies.

VSS BackupComplete Handling In case of Application Crash

$

Hi,

In case when the application crashes after creating a volume shadow copy . We might not have the Object to call BackupComplete() and SetBackupSucceeded().

I found that we can use CVssWriter::OnBackupShutdown method . In case of an application crash this gets invoked with snapshot ID as arguement .But still have no idea how call backupComplete() and SetBackupSucceeded( using the Snapshot set ID

I need to know if there is a way to call backupComplete() / SetBackupSucceeded() with the Snapshot Set ID I have

In real time this might be a big problem leaving my Vms to be in backing up mode in case the application is killed abruptly

(Any C++ Snippet example would be of great use)

Thanks

"Backup and Restore" "you do not have permission to open this file"

Restored  the user's files from a Win 7 computer made with Backup & Restore tool to a new Windows 10 computer using same tool. Attempting to open any yields a "you do not have permission" error. The username on the old system was "User" and on the new system she is "Louise".

We did not recreate the user called "User" on the new system; we restored alongside her "Louise" folder and will drag/drop them into the respective folders under her name.

Is it safe to do recursive takeown operation on all except the AppData folder ?
The AppData I imagine should not be overwritten, but pick and choose what may need to be moved?

Backup windows server 2008 fails - shadow copy - NTFS system partition

I want to back up my windows server but it fails when making shadow copy. I have seen that it only fails when I want to make complete backup of system (and not if I select only D or E drive).

I think that the problem is the empty 100 mb system drive that is not NTFS. Any ideas? There could be also another reason.

It fails also If I select only C drive because some system files also gets involved?

Hi all,

Filter Manager failed to attach to volume \Device\HarddiskVolume58. This volume will be unavailable for filtering until a reboot.  The final status was 0xc03a001c.
The error appears every time you back up. OS is the Windows Server 2016 standard. Can you tell me why these errors arise and how do I remove them? I note that this is a completely clean system.

We created a server for doing backups to a LTO drive. Is it possible to do the backups to the LTO drive using MS backup or do we have to use a third party application to do this?

Thank you,

VSS System writer - inconsistent shadow copy

$

We have VMs on which when running command "vssadmin list writers" I get "inconsistent shadow copy" under System Writer. We have shadow copy completely disabled on all disks. How is this even possible if VSS is disabled on all disks? When I go to services.msc and restart Cryptographic Services there are no more errors on running "vssadmin list writers" command. But when I try to make clone of VM again - clone fails and the error appear again. We use ESXi 6.5. Version of VMWare tools is 10.2.1.8267844. OS is Windows Server 2012 R2 and Windows server 2008 R2. How to bring System Writer in to working mode? Why System Writer is not working correctly when there are no shadow copies configured for any disk?

Windows Server 2012 Domain controllers and workstations and replacing

$

Hi Guys

New to this so thanks for any help in advance.

Basically my question is I have just joined a company where they operate a domain controller and backup domain controller.

These domain controllers obviously have workstations which are part of the domain.

So therefore what would be the best process of replacing a domain controller and retaining all communication and information (i.e workstations , group policy etc etc).

So for example if i replaced a primary domain controller what would be the best way as I dont want to goto each work station leave and rejoin the domain to re establish communication.

Thanks in advance

VSS critical error (ASR Writer)

$

I'm having problem with 3rd party backup software relying on VSS (transfer speed rapidly decreasing towards finish). The software is providing own solution for locked volumes, but for some reason it won't ever kick in. therefore always using VSS service which appears working but somehow broken.

From the event log the only critical error during the backup is related to ASR Writer (event id 8193)
Volume shadow copy service error: Unexpected error on routine call IVssAsrWriterBackup::GetAsrMetadata. hr= 0x80070001, Incorrect function.
Operation:Event PrepareForBackup

Also in the list of VSS writers, only ASR has positive last error

Writer name: 'ASR Writer'
   Writer Id: {be000cbe-11fe-4426-9c58-531aa6355fc4}
   Writer Instance Id: {47366552-4ab8-4b1a-a683-e68a100bfd3b}
   State: [5] Waiting for completion
   Last error: Non-retryable error

I don't know if it's related to my slowing down issue but may be.
Please for some clues how to fix the thing.
The OS used is Windows 8.1 (x64) / not server
