Event error 13 vmicvss Windows Server 2012 unable to perform online backup because scoped snapshots enabled

First W2K12 install, so, learning. W2K12 running in guest W2K8R2 Hyper-V. See error below. Been occuring since install, several events recorded within same 15 minute period each day, before and after joined to domain. Bing/Google searches and Event ID turned up no info. Quesrions:

  1. Why are online backups not enabled by default? (what if this were an Exchange or AD machine, for example)
  2. Where can I read up on scoped snapshots (again, searching yielded no info)
  3. In what scenarios should I leave scoped snapshots disabled? In what scenarios should I enable?

incidentally, this particular vm will be for SQL 2012 Enterprise. Followed immediately by a SharePoint 2013 vm also running W2K12.

External USB disk unusable after Windows Server Backup

$

Hi all,
I have connected a usb external drive as a backup to disk solution using Windows Backup feature on Windows Server 2008 R2 in a test environment to see if what the limitations are. After all my tests I've removed the test server and now I find that whenever I connect the usb drive it will not be read.
I have tried deleting the volume, formatting the partition, nothing helps. After a lot of tests it got to a point where it would either show as RAW partition or simply as not initialized. I've worked with diskpart and with the GUI tools to try and make something of it but nothing worked.
Most of the times I would get errors that the file specified does not exist and in event viewer I find the following errors:

Event ID 140: The system failed to flush data to the transaction log. Corruption may occur in VolumeId: \\?\Volume{93c8cbc2-42fb-11e3-be75-5cac4cfd0b06}, DeviceName: \Device\HarddiskVolume5.

(A device which does not exist was specified.)

Oddly enough Volume 5 is on the internal Hard disk of the machine I'm using right now, not on the USB disk.

Eent ID 153: The IO operation at logical block address 5f186f for Disk 1 was retried.

After many different attempts I managed to get it to see the volume as it was named by the backup service again but I can't browse the files, nor can I reformat.
Any ideas?

Error [0x8007007b] when backing up system state in windows backup for windows 2008 R2

$

running wbadmin system state results in the following error log:

Error in backup of C:\windows\\systemroot\ during enumerate: Error [0x8007007b] The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect.

Having searched all over the web, the consensus seems to be that this error means that some service has a bad image path. I even sound a nifty powershell script that discovers services with possible problems. I fixed the problems it brought up in the registry (there was only one), but I still get that error... I've been backwards and forwards through the list of services many times, and I don't see any problems.. Anybody got an idea??

Re-establish removed backup drive

Dear TechNet, I had originally established 2 x backup drive destinations (USB) for offsite rotation on SBS 2011 (Server 2008 R2) -Backup Disk (1) and Backup Disk (2). Decision was made to include an additional 2 x backup drive destinations - Backup Disk (3) and Backup Disk (4). It is understood that when adding additional Backup Drives the listed Backup Disks must be connected in order to complete the Backup Schedule configuration. However, there are only 2 x USB ports available on the Server for external Backup Drives.

I have now configured the Backup Schedule to see Backup Disk (3) and Backup Disk (4) - and this is working well. I would understand that this means that Backup Disk (1) and Backup Disk (2) have been "removed"?

Is there any way I can restore from the original Backup Disk (1) and Backup Disk (2)?

Many thanks, best regards,

Ced Israelsohn

Disable server password to a specific user

I have Windows Home Server 2011 at work. All the computers in the office have access to the server but each of us need to enter the username and password in order to get it. How do I disable the password for just one computer (Boss' computer) so she will be the only one who doesn't need to enter the password?

BMR/Systemstate backup not working on windows server 2008 error 2147942487

Hi all;

I came to seek solution for my problem with system image backup. We are using SCDPM2010 to backup our server farm. However, one server is refusing to give BMR backup. I tried to backup to an external HDD as a test, it also didnt work.

I tried observing the backup process using "wbadmin get status", it goes smoothly until it reaches 99%, at which it gives an error: The parameter is incorrect.

However, after alot of research, I found some answers suggest doing a chkdsk /F on reboot. However I tried, but the server also gave another error "cannot open volume for direct access"

here is the output from chkdsk command without any arguments:

Chkdsk was executed in read-only mode on a volume snapshot.

Certutil and indirect CRL

Hello!

I need to verify a certificate manually. CDP in this certificate points to indirect CRL. Hence, the issuer of CRL is not equal to the issuer of certificate.

I try the command:

certutil -verify -urlfetch last.cer

The result: Wrong issuer "Base CRL".

Then I look at CAPI2 events by means of Eventvwr.msc. There I see the following details:

 - CertRejectedRevocationInfo + SubjectCertificate + IssuerCertificate + CertificateRevocationList
  - Action
   [ name]  IsCrlSignedByCertIssuer
  - EventAuxInfo
   [ ProcessName]  certutil.exe
  - CorrelationAuxInfo

In this case CRL is not signed by cert issuer, really. But why does this fact result in error?

Does certutil work with indirect CRLs?

How can we pass a powershell array object to c sharp console app

Hi there,

I need to execute a PowerShell script from c sharp- console application. One of the object sends an array of string elements from PowerShell.

I am unable to get the arrays/objects/list items in c sharp. The values for the same are coming as null in console application.

Please suggest me asap.

Thanks.

PowerShell code:
$sqlInstances = (Get-ItemProperty 'HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server').InstalledInstances
write-output "Sql Server is installed and the sql instances are: " $sqlInstances

C sharp code-
RunspaceConfiguration runspaceConfiguration = RunspaceConfiguration.Create();

Runspace runspace = RunspaceFactory.CreateRunspace(runspaceConfiguration);
Runspace.Open();

RunspaceInvoke scriptInvoker = new RunspaceInvoke(runspace);
scriptInvoker.Invoke("Set-ExecutionPolicy Unrestricted");

PowerShell objPowershell = PowerShell.Create();
objPowershell.Runspace = runspace;

var directory = Environment.CurrentDirectory;
string filePath = System.IO.Path.Combine(directory, "Install-DIYMPS.ps1");
string scriptContents = File.ReadAllText(filePath);
objPowershell.AddScript(scriptContents);
Collection<PSObject> psObjects;
psObjects = objPowershell.Invoke();
objPowershell.Dispose();

StringBuilder stringBuilder = new StringBuilder();

foreach (PSObject obj in psObjects)
               {
                    if (obj != null)
                    {
                        stringBuilder.AppendLine(obj.ToString());
                        stringBuilder.AppendLine();
                    }
                }

                Console.Write(stringBuilder.ToString());

Hi there,

I need to execute a powershell scripy from console application (c sharp). One of the objects ($SqlInstances) in Powershell script sends a string array.

The same object ($SqlInstances) when fetched in console application shows the value as null.

Please find the attached code block that I have written. It works fine for all variables except  an array/list objects.

Please suggest.

Thanks.

PowerShell code:
$sqlInstances = (Get-ItemProperty 'HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server').InstalledInstances
write-output "Sql Server is installed and the sql instances are: " $sqlInstances

C sharp code-
RunspaceConfiguration runspaceConfiguration = RunspaceConfiguration.Create();

Runspace runspace = RunspaceFactory.CreateRunspace(runspaceConfiguration);
Runspace.Open();

RunspaceInvoke scriptInvoker = new RunspaceInvoke(runspace);
scriptInvoker.Invoke("Set-ExecutionPolicy Unrestricted");

PowerShell objPowershell = PowerShell.Create();
objPowershell.Runspace = runspace;

var directory = Environment.CurrentDirectory;
string filePath = System.IO.Path.Combine(directory, "Install-DIYMPS.ps1");
string scriptContents = File.ReadAllText(filePath);
objPowershell.AddScript(scriptContents);
Collection<PSObject> psObjects;
psObjects = objPowershell.Invoke();
objPowershell.Dispose();

StringBuilder stringBuilder = new StringBuilder();

foreach (PSObject obj in psObjects)
               {
                    if (obj != null)
                    {
                        stringBuilder.AppendLine(obj.ToString());
                        stringBuilder.AppendLine();
                    }
                }

                Console.Write(stringBuilder.ToString());

Windows 2012: Hyper-V Parallel Backup Maximum Limit

$

Hi All,

I am creating a best practice document for my backup environment.  I am currently using CommVault v10.   We have a 2 node

cluster ( Windows 2012 Hyper-V ) in the environment with one cluster shared volume.  I had known that Windows 2012 is

allowing parallel backups . Windows 2008 Hyper-V doesnt allow it because of the redirected IO mode.  As I am currently aware of

Vmware limitation to the number of virtual machines to backup at the same time on the same datastore to 3 VMs.  The reason it

is limited to 3 is to avoid overwhelming the datastore with IOs as there will be multiple Vmware snapshots created when running

the backup.    In Hyper-V 2012 is there such a limit?  Also how many virtual machines can be backup at the same time that is sitting on one Hyper-V node in a cluster?

If there is no answer to my question, I would appreciate if someone can point me to the right URL or pdf file as to what are the do's and don'ts that Microsoft has created so as not to have issues with backing up virtual machines.

Any info is appreciated

Windows 7 backup fails with Error Code 0x80070002

I am trying to back up my computer to 32 GB USB flashdrive and I get the error 0x80070002; the system cannot find the file specified.

I've checked the event logs and I see the error: Event 14, volsnap "The shadow copies of volume C: were aborted because of an IO failure on volume C:."

I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium, Service Pack 1, 64x.

I can't find my backups on my external hard drive

Windows 7 recognizes my external hard drive, and "Backup & Restore" records that backups are being done on schedule, but I can't find the backups on the external drive, or create a folder on that drive where the backups are saved. Any suggestions?

The Best Way to Restore a DC if it is removed from Domain

$

Good Day,

I have 2 Windows Server 2008 R2 DC's in my network and I am trying to upgrade 1 of them to Server 2012 R2. The DC being replaced is also running Certificate Services. To do this I will need to remove AD from the DC as well as remove CA and remove it from the domain. I plan on backing up and restoring Active Directory/Certificate Services to the new Server 2012 box with the new server using the same name as the old DC.

I am worried about this transition because if something goes wrong I will have to not only restore from backup I will have to restore the computer object in AD as well.

Would the best strategy be:

Backup AD using ntdsutil
Uninstall AD and CA from DC01
Remove DC01 from domain
** failure occurs **
Restore DC01 computer object in AD on DC02 using ntdsutil authoritative restore
Restore full OS on DC01 from tape backup

The problem I have with this is all of the setting in Sites and Services will still be gone because of the removal of AD from DC01. I am also thinking about simply taking snapshots of the 2 DC's as they are both Virtual Servers in Hyper-V

Another Strategy (Not approved of as snapshot is NOT a backup):

Snapshot both DC01 and DC02
Uninstall AD and CA from DC01
Remove DC01 from domain
** failure occurs **
Revert back to pre-removal snapshot of DC02
Revert back to pre-removal snapshot of DC01

Any help would be awesome!

Any ideas?
