Recovery wizard in Server 2008 Backup not showing all available backups

We have a Windows 2008 R2 server with a dedicated USB drive for backups. I check the backup routinely and it appears to get a good backup every day. According to the logs, I have 79 copies of the backup available. But when I needed to restore a file this morning, the Recovery Wizard only showed  3 days of backups to choose from, going back to last Friday.

How do I get the recovery wizard to see the other backups that are on that disk?

Thanks!

Backup/Restore using Clonezilla

We have an old server that we are running Clonezilla on to do Backups.  The old server was simple and didn't have Active Directory or Hyper-V installed.  The Clonezilla backup is not the server edition.  The old server has Windows 2008 R2.

Our new server is a failover cluster (2 nodes) using Hyper-V, and had to have Active Directory to be up to Security standards of our company.  It uses live migration also.  We are worried that if we use Clonezilla on the new servers that we will get caught by Active Directory upon restores from our Clonezilla Backups.  Maybe the GUID will be an issue, but we're not sure.  We are worried to test our Clonezilla backup/restore on the new server because we might run into an issue with using this method to restore.  The new server has Windows 2008 R2 also, and has a SAN to store the VM's and database.

So my question is, can we expect our Clonezilla backup/restore to work on our failover server nodes with the added Active Directory?

I was reading these links that refer to Clonezilla, but the setup is different. http://techjournal.318.com/tag/windows/,http://community.spiceworks.com/topic/440193-windows-7-cloning-what-does-everyone-use .  We aren't your typical IT people, and don't have a lot of experience with this.

Thanks!

Server Loses Ability to Ping to the Internet

Hello,

I have a new physical HP server running Server 2008 R2 with Whats Up Gold. Recently, the server started developing an issue roughly every 48 hours where it cannot ping or use ICMP to the internet. The ability to ping to the internet returns roughly two hours later after the start of the symptoms or if I perform a reboot. We know this because we have some stuff we monitor over the internet. It has been in production since November and started this behavior in early January for some reason. Nothing has changed to my knowledge that would cause this issue.  It doesn't lose the ability to use ICMP internally just going out to the internet. The local firewall is off and IPv6 is not disabled. I have seen this happen live and have been able to troubleshoot with our network engineers. They are supposedly not seeing any denials of traffic on their firewalls or load balancers.

So far I have:

1. Changed cabling and switch ports with no luck

2. Worked with HP to replaced the NIC card itself and make sure drivers, BIOS, and firmware are updated

3. Rebuilt the TCP/IP stack on the local server

4. Taken the server out of production, changed the network segment and local IP (to confirm the problem actually isn't a network firewall issue), and the server still isn't able to ping to the internet.

The discovery of #4 leads to me believe it is the server itself. Like I said in the above paragraph, the server's ability returns usually within two hours or immediately after a reboot.

I am on the verge of either rebuilding or demanding HP replace the server. The server is fully up to date on patches and drivers. I just really haven't seen behavior like this that didn't involve changing out the NIC. I am not sure if changing the system board would do anything per say. I just want to know what else I could be missing?

I am a new users on Windows server 2008R2 now. And I am about to backup the OS. So, may I know if i used Window Server Backup function, will the operation be backing up not only OS and apps but also the system users?

If the backup service can't backup the system users, is there any exclusive way to backup users list?

I'm fresh in using Windows Server 2008R2, please help me out. Thanks in advance....

When in the bare metal restore process is the Recovery partition made?

When in the bare metal restore process is the Recovery partition made?

When you boot from the Windows OS disks to do a bare metal restore, you get to the point where it asks you where your backup is, you point to it, and it performs the restore.  However, when you are finished, there is also a Recovery partition ahead of the OS partition.  When did the Recovery partition get made, before it asked where the backup is, or after?  Respond only if you know.

Thanks!

VSS snapshot of 1.1TB is ending after few hours with timeout. No errors in event log

Hello,

does someone have experienced issue where starting making snapshot (forum GUI or command line) is taking a lot of time and then it just ends with timeout?

I have scenario on virtualised Windows Web Server 2008 R2 where backup is being made by Idera Backup Software but since it relies on VSS Snapshots then we can just skip this point because making snapshots from directly Windows command line or drive preferences/GUI is ending with timeout for this single drive after few hours. Affected system has 3 drives: C - 95GB, D-1.06TB and E-120GB. C and E can be backuped correctly and only drive D has problems. System is updated with latest drivers vssadmin for writers returns list without any errors and snapshot for drive D which ends with timeout is not generating any error in event log. I wanted to configure VSS trace like it is being instructed on this site:

http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/tsminfo/v6/index.jsp?topic=%2Fcom.ibm.itsm.tshoot.doc%2Ft_pdg_traceprfrm.html

but I don't see any trace.txt file on given location. If I remove drive D from backup process it ends without errors. System was restarted many times. Only thing which is visible in windows Event log (application part) is that "The VSS service is shutting down due to idle timeout." about 4 hours after snapshot making proces is starting.

I've contacted Idera backup about this but they can't help too much if Windows snapshot process is failing. They suggested that something can be wrong with this drive but since this is virtualised machine and all of my VM are being stored on RAID10 disk array connected to my server using fiber connections then I don't think that this is hardware issue (especially when other two drives are located on the same LUN on disk array).

Any suggestions?

Regards

We have Windows 2012 Server hosting 2 VMs - Domain Controller & RDS.  We have been doing Windows Server Backup incremental and have an ongoing issue with scheduled backups each night.  The backup shows completed with warnings and generates 2 log files.

The first log files shows:

Backup of volume \\?\Volume{5d46f853-5db2-11e2-93e7-806e6f6e6963}\ succeeded.

Backup of volume C: succeeded.

Backup of volume F: succeeded.

We had been getting a successful backup once or twice a week which showed completed (with no mentioned of warnings) but now it regularly shows completed with warnings as noted above.

We did a manual full backup of the DC to a different external drive a few days ago and that completed without warnings and the backup shows:  E: Completed 63.38 Full - VSS Copy Backup Successful, 8/27/13 3:35 PM - 4:43 PM. Data Transferred 63.38

On a side note, we can view the logs in the windows/logs/windowsserverbackup directory but when we attempt to view the details of a log file through the Local Backup Console for any log which shows completed with errors, we get a "MMC has detected an error in the snapin and will unload and then it shows Object referenced not set to instance of an object."  The manual backup noted above that was successful is able to be viewed through the Local Backup Console without this error.

Any idea as to why this is failing during the scheduled backups?  This hosts a database that we need to have regular successful backups.

Restore SBS 2008

I have an Dell PowerEdge T310 that came with a PERC S300 controller.  I want to change that to an PERC H700 controller.  That means I will need to remake the RAID-5 disk, which contains all of the partitions and volumes.  They fill the disk space.  The last time I did this I booted with the Dell Driver and Documentation disk, and it led me through until the time when it asked me to make a partition, which I did for the C: drive, and another extended partition, with a logical D: data partition, and restore D: as I recall.

Before I had extra physical disk space.  This time the partitions and volumes fill the drive.  From what I read, if I don't get the boundaries just right, I will be trying to restore to a volume that is slightly smaller than the backup, and even if there is a lot of free space, it won't restore.  What steps should I take to backup and restore this server?  Should I be shrinking volumes?

Thanks!

[Windows Server 2008 R2] [Windows Server Backup] How to remove an old backup set

$

Hello,

long time ago I made a backup of some files of a server on a network location running manually a command like this one:

"wbadmin start backup -backupTarget:\\Server1\Backup\MyServer\wbadmin_Effe -include:F: -user:DOMAIN\myself -password:******** -quiet"

Now this network location is no more available because that machine is definitely broken.

I have no problems to run and create backups on a local drive or on other network locations.

My only problem is that now, in the main window of Windows Server Backup, when i click "View details" under "All Backups", I can still see that backup as the oldest available... that's a bit annoying.

It appears also if I run the command "wbadmin GET VERSIONS".

Does anybody know how can I remove this backup version set from my server?

Thanks,
    Alex.

Drivers for Bare Metal Recovery

New Dell T320 server with WS 2012 standard (our main software VAR doesn't yet support install on R2), with LTO-5 tape drive.

Have used Symantec BE (currently BE2102) for tape backups on prior servers for past several years. Correctly configured tape backups can be used for disaster recovery, booting to the BE DR DVD.

BE doesn't support WS 2012 (+/- R2) yet, may be released in as soon as a week or two.

Need temporary total server backup each night with disaster recovery functionality.

Have a buffalo terastation quad 8 TB running WSS 2008 R2 for NAS, and a few 1 TB seagate portable USB drives for offsite copies.

Have made a successful initial BMR backup to the NAS with windows server backup, and plan manual backups to be scheduled each day to different directory on the NAS, since backups to network drives overwrite prior backups. Copies of NAS backups for offsite storage will be made to the portable drives the next morning via USB 3 port on the NAS.

My only experience with similar image restore is with my laptops, with system images stored on similar portable external HDs, renaming all but the desired backup with extensions indicating date. Both have had system images restored in both Windows 8, and now 8.1 without any driver problems, booting to the equivalent of Windows Recovery Environment (reached after a variety of options after boot) on each laptop. Haven't tried installation disc, as not from hardware error such as HD failure and replacement. Each has a variety of drivers that would presumably be needed from HP or Dell for successful operation. The USB 3 external hard disc is recognized, and image restore has been flawless on each laptop.

The server has three 1 TB SAS drives in RAID 5, configured as one virtual C: drive. Dell tech support told me that the drivers for the Dell RAID controller are intrinsic to the OS; I had asked them why no drivers were available on their driver update site. I plan a partial test early this week with reboot to the recovery environment, then see if the network storage site is available, then see if the virtual disc is recognized.

Will the BMR restore the image to the virtual drive, or won't it be recognized?

Also have a smaller BMR on a 64GB flash drive made after initial OS install and configuration, prior to software installation and production use. Don't plan to use it unless fresh OS install is needed.

Backup choices were limited to local disc or network share, so made the flash drive a share to allow use for backups.

Can the BMR on the flash drive be used the same way as the NAS backup, if plugged into a functioning system on our network and configured as a network share?

Thanks

Windows Server 2008 R2

Four days ago, I restored files successfully from USB drive, with many available backup dates. Today, I needed to restore files from the same drive, but only the last two days backups are available. Of course, I need to go back five days. The drive is only half full, so space is not an issue.

Is there any hope of recovering these files?

Huge shadow copy

Dear gentlemen in MS community

I'm facing a little problem doing WSB backup for a certain server .

The server has two local drives:

C:\ 280 GB, 11.3 GB available.

D:\ 400 GB, 83.75 GB available.

WSB was not working with the default VSS storage setting due to low space in C:

So I move shadowstorage for C drive to D drive without setting any limit for shadowstorage. (UNBOUNDED).

When I run the backup, the D volume becomes full and then the backup operation fails with error code 2155348041

So, how do I run this backup successfully?

Backing up the server to a large drive on a client computer.

Hi,

I'm running a small network with a Windows 2012 Server Essentials server and 8 client computers running Windows 7 pro. One of my client computers is located in the building adjacent to the server home building some 200ft away. This computer is hard wired into the network and functions fine. I installed a large secondary hard drive onto this computer and shared it with the network. It's visible and accessible to the network. I'd like to configure Windows Backup to backup the server each day to the secondary hard drive, however I'm having trouble configuring Backup. It seems that Backup only wants to back up to an external hard drive connected to the server with a USB connection. Please advise me how, if it's even possible, to configure Backup to back up the the client computer. Will I have to invest in a 3rd party software to accomplish this? If I need additional backup software can you reccommend one?

Thank you for your input.
