WBadmin backups and permissions - thoroughly confused on restoring files
Windows 2008 R2 Standard SP1
Using a Power Shell script on this server to backup this server and the script is launched via Task Scheduler.
Task launch looks like this:
Program/Script: C:\Windows\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\powershell.exe
Add Arguments: -nologo -noninteractive –Command "& {F:\Scripts\Backup\Backup.ps1}"
Start in: C:\Windows\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\
It is set to run as an administrative account.
Here is the contents of the PS1 script:
Wbadmin start backup -backupTarget:\\BackupServer\backups$\ -include:'c:,F:\Data,F:\homedirs,F:\Inventory,F:\Production,F:\Share' -allCritical -systemState -vssFull -quiet
$date = get-date -uFormat "%Y-%m-%d"
ren \\BackupServer\backups$\WindowsImageBackup\Server \\BackupServer\backups$\WindowsImageBackup\Server-$date
The backup appears to run successfully. There are no errors in the error logs. According to the logs for that backup date all files were successfully backed up, INCLUDING the data in homedirs.
Despite that when I go to restore data for someone's homedir I cannot do so. When I look through the catalog using Windows Server Backup I cannot see anything in any homedir unless I previously had permission to that directory.
Why is this and how do I resolve this? I need to be able to see individual files within the catalog if I want to restore them for users. I have Enterprise/Domain Admin permissions so adding in permissions isn't a problem but it's something I would prefer not to do.

WBADMIN only Systemstate without EFI partition
Hi guys!
We are trying to achieve/run Windows Server Backup thru command line. We are using this command:
wbadmin start systemstatebackup -backupTarget:E: -quiet FileForce "$backuplog"
The problem is, that in this case windows server backup tool "saids" it will also backup EFI SYSTEM PARTITION and SYSTEM C:, but we would only like to backup SYSTEMSTATE and nothing else. We are able to do that thru GUI, but how to achieve it with command line?
LOG OUTPUT INFORMATION: This will back up the system state from volume(s) Local Disk(EFI System Partition) (200.00 MB),SYSTEM(C:) to E:.

What are my back up solution options using Windows Server Backup?
Using command line to schedule NTBackup
I'm pretty green when it comes to command line, so I'm hopping someone can give me a little help.
Trying to get a 2012 Server to do a full system backup. System State, Bare Metal, and C. I'm backing up to a network drive.
I need to do this as a scheduled task to run every other week. I know once the task is made, I can use the GUI task scheduler to set up time/days to run, but I am not sure on the command.
Here is what I'm trying. Please advise.
schtasks /create /sc weekly /mo 2 /d mon /tn week2 /st 10:00 /tr "wbadmin start backup -backuptarget:\\10.10.10.10\daily_backup -allcritical -quiet
Thanks for any tips
How to Backup to Netowrk Drive with Windows Server Backup
Windows Server 2008 Enterprise.
I installed/activated the Windows Server Backup feature on my server. However, when I setup a backup using the wizard, it only shows me local disks as destinations for my backup. How can I make this backup wizard see my network drive? I want to send the backup there and not locally. Thanks for any help.

Can I shrink a logical drive, and not the extended partition, to do a bare metal restore to a smaller drive?
The typical Dell layout is diagnostic partition, followed by a Recovery (E:) partition, followed by the System (C:) partition, followed by an extended partition with a logical volume (D:). If I use Diskpart to shrink the D: "partition", it will leave me with free space, not unallocated space. Thus, it actually shrinks the logical drive, and the extended partition remains the same size as it was, with no means to shrink it.
The question is, if I shrink the D: logical drive, and not the extended partition, and then get system backups, will I be able to a bare metal restore to the smaller virtual drive of the H700?
Files missing on restoration

DPM 2012, Exclude WDS images from the System State Backups.
Hi
I am using DPM 2012 SP1 on Windows Server 2012. Trying to backup a Windows Server 2008 that hosts our Windows Deployment Services. We have a number of Images on the D drive of that server using 162GB of space on the hard drive.
There is more space available on the D: drive than the C drive so I have edited the psdatasourceconfig.xml file so that the SystemStateBackup by WBS is backed up to D:\WindowsImageBackup\*. Then the DPM part of the backup can take over and backup to the disks on our backup server.
IF I stop the Windows Deployment Services Service - the backup runs like a dream, takes about 10GB of space on the D drive and then moves over to the Backup Server.
If the Windows Deployment Services Service is running - the D:\RemoteInstall\Images\ folder is included as part of the SystemStateBackup and the extra 162GB of files means that the D: drive runs out of space and the SystemStateBackup fails.
There is a section in the psdatasourceconfig.xml file called <FilesToExclude/> but I cannot work out the syntax for this or if this is the right place.
Can you please help.
Thanks

"Windows Backup cannot read the backup destination" when trying to backup to Backup Once to Samba share on NAS
Environment:
Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials running in VirtualBox in a Windows 7 host. Networking is configured and works fine.
Background:
My only backup needs are to copy the contents of two folders to a NAS folder every day at 2 AM.
I configured a backup schedule in Windows Server Backup (wbadmin) to a network location which is hosted as a Samba share on a Synology NAS.
For authentication, I created a backup user which has the same username and password as a user on the Samba share, with permission to read and write the backup folder. I added this user to the Backup Operators group.
Problem:
When I try to run the Backup Once operation to test my backup, I get the following error message:
"Windows Backup cannot read the backup destination."
What I've tried:
I verified that the location is directly accessible in Windows by copying and pasting the address from the Windows Server Backup destination into explorer. Providing the backup user credentials opened the location and creating/reading files worked fine.
Adding the backup user to the Administrators group did not have an effect.
Update 2014-02-18
I checked the backup destination and was surprised to find that the scheduled backup actually completes successfully. However, Backup Once always results in the above error message. So the problem is confined to the "Backup Once" operation.
Scheduled Backups Stopped Running
I have two Hyper-V 2012 Servers on which I have scheduled a number of backup jobs using the SCHTASKS command. The backups have been running fine since I created the tasks on 2/26/2014 until last night. On one of the servers the backup was supposed to run at 6:00pm last night and on the other one it should have run at 7:00pm. On both of them the backup task was apparently not triggered, when I view the event logs for the task manager there is no entry there at all for those times.
On the server where the backup was supposed to run at 6:00 last night I brought up the task manager and see this for the job.
Name: WeeklyBackupMonday
Status: Ready
Triggers: at 6:00 pm every Monday of every week starting 2/26/2014
Next Run Time: 3/17/2014 at 6:00pm
Last Run Time: 3/3/2014 at 6:00pm
Result: The last job finished successfully.
Clearly the job that was supposed to run on the 10th did not run, the same thing is happening on both servers. The other server has a backup job that is supposed to run on Sunday and it also did not run. The history shows that prior to Sunday the jobs were running normally.
I find it very strange that both servers started exhibiting the same issue simultaneously and am having a difficult time knowing how to troubleshoot the issue as I can not find anything in the logs regarding why it may have failed. Can any one point me in the right direction for troubleshooting this issue?
Thanks in advance.
Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V host. Backup failing with the error code 2155348129.
Hi all,
Background of problematic server - Server 2008 R2 SP1 running as a Hyper-V host. Runs 1x guest. Backing up full server using Windows backup to a 2TB SATA harddisk. Backup used to work until an ISCSI connection is disconnected in the guest. BackupWORKS if guest is turned off
Background of guest server - Server 2008 R2 SP1. DC and Exchange 2010 installed. It's backup target used to be a NAS via ISCSI. Now it is backing up to an attached VHD file

Have tried applying the hotFix KB975354 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/975354/en-us) only to be told that it isn't applicable to my system.
I can also confirm that the ISCSI connection is definitely dropped in guest. Also, I've disabled the service "Microsoft ISCSI initiator Service" in guest.
Would appreciate if anyone let me know what else to be looking out for.

Windows Backup After Reboot
I have a problem with Windows Backup on Windows Server 2012 R2. I'm using Windows Backup for backing up my Hyper-V virtual machines and "Host Component". I'm using planned backup with dedicated external harddrive. Everything works fine, until I reboot host server. After reboot, backup stops working with error code 0x80780049. What helps is deleting and recreating planned backup job, but I can't recreate backup jobs on every Hyper-V host after every reboot. Has someone an idea what can cause this?
Thank you..
Unable to do incremental backups?
Hi guys!
We are trying to make incremental backups to a dedidacted attached external disk on Windows Server 2008 r2.
No matter if we use LINE1 or LINE2, it always does full backup:
wbadmin start backup -allCritical -backupTarget:E: -include:d: -vssfull-quiet | Out-FileForce "$backuplog"
wbadmin start backup -allCritical -backupTarget:E: -include:d: -quiet | Out-FileForce "$backuplog"
Any hints how to achieve doing incremental backups using Windows Server Backup tool?
with best regards,
bostjanc
Windows 2012 System State Backup Fails
We have a Windows 2012 Domain Controller VM that we would like to backup the System State using DPM. Agent has been installed and the Windows Backup has been added.
When the backup runs in DPM, the job fails. Here is the error code:
- DPM cannot create a backup because Windows Server Backup (WSB) on the protected computer encountered an error (WSB Event ID: 517, WSB Error Code: 0x12363C0). (ID 30229 Details: Internal error code: 0x80990ED0)
When we try and create the backup using Windows Backup, the following error is in the log file:
- following error code '0x807800C5' (There was a failure in preparing the backup image of one of the volumes in the backup set.). Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.
We have tried attaching a separate drive and backup to a shared location. Both fail.
We have tried backup of just a few files on the DC instead of the System State, this fails as well.
All VSS Writers show as Stable with no errors
Server has the latest updates
Server has been rebooted, same issue
VM is Windows 2012 on a Windows 2008 R2 clustered host and is using Dynamic Disks (not fixed disks).
Anyone have any thoughts on what could be going on?
Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials Backup configurations/questions
Hi there,
Just set up a server for the first time running Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials.
I have configured a backup to run once daily from a 300gb drive to both an internal 1TB drive and added an external 500gb drive for offsite storage however it doesn't seem to be creating a copy on the external drive at all.
Am I to assume that I need to create an entirely separate schedule somehow just for the external drive? Not sure how to do this, so instructions or link to an article on this would be excellent if this is the case.
Secondly, am I also right in assuming that by default it stores only incremental backups of data? Handy for saving storage space but wondered if I have the ability to configure the backups to store say, 10 days of data and write back over them after that? Or would incremental be easier/far superior?
Will the incremental backups occur until the drive is completely full?
I have struggled to find any detailed information regarding backups in Windows Server 2012, other than creating a schedule and choosing the disk to back up to, but none of the above questions can be answered from anything I've found.
Having mapped a network drive from the server to two client machines, overnight both the client machines required me to re-map them this morning. Any help on ensuring the drive stays mapped permanently would be most appreciated as well.
In terms of logging into the server on the mapped drive with user accounts, is there any way of logging which users edit/change files on the drive or restricting the user accounts from deleting things/viewing certain folders or files?
Recapping:
- Can't get backups to work on 500GB external drive
- How do the incremental backups actually work?
- Any supporting articles that actually have detailed information
- Mapped drives disconnecting/disappearing on client machines when turned off
- User account restrictions when logging into server via mapped network drive
Kind Regards.
