Event ID 4097 Hyper-V-Integration-VSS

Hello,

Trying to figure out why I'm getting Event ID 4097 Hyper-V-Integration-VSS after the backup runs. The event says:

"The Virtual machine A9BCE8FC-FB7A-463A-B4F3-3A6AE83446B7 cannot be backed up since it has dynamic disks in it"

These starting to appear after I had to add another virtual hard disk to my Exchange 2010 VM. Everything is working fine and the backups complete successfully. The backup is being done by CA ArcServ. I also get the same errors if I use Windows Server Backup as well. The second additional virtual hard drive is a fixed disk, not dynamic.

Dose anybody know why I"m getting these and how to fix it so they go away?

Backup - Advice (multiple locations)

Hello,

I currently have my Server 2012 Essentials running raid 1.

It also has a third internal disk which I have configured an incremental backup, all data plus bare metal.

Ideally I had hoped to use robocopy to copy all the data on this 3rd disk to a hidden disk on one of the client pc's except windows has hidden this drive on the server and the folders seem to be locked down with permissions. Is it possible / sensible to be copy this incremental off to another pc.

The next stage would be to robocopy from the client pc's hidden drive to two removable external drives swapped and removed from the office.

Can someone please help, can I make this drive visible (by giving it a letter) and what permissions do I need to add to be able to copy the WindowsImageBackup folder? (since nothing I have tried works)

any advice would be very much appreciated.

Server 2012 Backup and Restore problems

I created a full system backup (Bare Metal Copy) to an external USB drive with Windows Server Backup and it made a complete backup as expected. I am running Server 2012 r2. What I did not expect is that when I went to use that backup from the server 2012 r2 boot disk, it could see the USB drive, but not the image that I wanted to restore to. Am I doing something wrong? There are tons of articles on how to do the restore, but those are useless if the backup image can't be read by windows setup.

Hello we have server 2008 with volume shadow copies to run "Every 1 hour for 2 hours every day...". It will start at 6 am and run every hour until 8 am then stops, then starts all over again the next morning at 6 am. I looked in the event view to see if VSS was throwing any errors, and I did not see anything. Where should I start to diagnose my problem? Has anyone else had this issue before?

Backup error due to System Writer missing (enumeration of system32 printer dlls takes too long)

Hi,

On a Windows 2008 R2 we get a Windows Backup error while backupping System State (event id: 5, error code: '2155347997').

We tried *ALL* solutions found on Internet regarding the same issue (and we also applied the suggested hotfix KB2807849) but without success. So we DIGGED INTO VSS to see what is happening.

***1) First we saw that an USB printer had a problem and this resulted inhundreds of entries in the following registry keys:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\StillImage\DeviceNameStore\Canon MF6500 Series #100010]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\StillImage\DeviceNameStore\Canon MF6500 Series #100011]
...
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\StillImage\DeviceNameStore\{6BDD1FC6-810F-11D0-BEC7-08002BE2092F}\79590]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\StillImage\DeviceNameStore\{6BDD1FC6-810F-11D0-BEC7-08002BE2092F}\79591]
...

***2) We completely removed ALL drivers/devices related to that printer (now the DeviceNameStore is empty and
pnputil -e returns no driver related to the printer)

***3) Using process monitor we saw that during vssadmin list writers the system is searching for the DLLs related to that printer AND SEEMS CAUGHT IN AN ENDLESS LOOP: this is an excerpt of the scan:

.... THE SAME FILES REPEATED HUNDREDS OF TIMES!!!! ...

It seems that somewhere there is a catalog of system files which still contains the references to the (same) files used by the hundreds of devices that WERE present in the DeviceNameStore (see point ***1 above, but now it is empty),  and the System Writer continues to search/enumerate those files and fails.

How can I fix it ? Is there a way to "reset" the System Writer and "rebuild" (???) the correct files that it should backup? (in order to complete a successfull system state backup)

Can you help me?

Thank you in advance.

1. Taken a backup by excluding the VM s.

3. Taken a backup after removing antivirus

4. Deleted all catalog files , formatting the drive , removing/adding the backup feature

But nothing worked.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

We have two new Windows Servers 2012 R2 that I'm trying to set backups on using a script. When I used the -allCritical switch, I get the error specified in the subject. When I look at the partition information using diskpart, I see a 2048 MB partition with no drive letter labeled as System that is FAT32. I was never prompted to my recollection of what file system to format the partition with. Is it safe to assign this partition a letter, convert to NTFS, and then remove the drive letter?

Thanks

Hello,

I am new to servers and I do not have any experience at all.

I would like to know if I can just connect an external HD to my Server (currently running Windows Server 2003) an make a copy-paste action to copy the files and have a back-up? Is this process risky (I need to copy 1TB) ? or do I need any special sequence that I must follow to get the back up of these files?

Thanks!

Consolidating Windows Server 2008 R2 backups?

$
0

I'm doing a favour for someone by doing their backup rotations (which they're doing in Windows Server Backup) and also periodic testing of server restores. To this end, I've taken possession of a huge number of hard disks to rotate for backups... and it's kind of a nightmare to deal with now that the backups are sprawled all over these disks, especially since the size of the backups dwarfs the capacity of each disk.

what I'd like to do is

1. Consolidate all the backup disks into a single location, which I can then archive properly.

2. Recycle a couple of those disks into a new rotation of just two disks per server for backups going forwards.

3. Recycle / keep the rest as spares.

What I REALLY want to avoid is the situation where I get asked to restore a backup, and I end up hunting in ten disks for when the required restore date might be.

Could someone tell me the best way (or if there is a way) to consolidate multiple backup disks into one location? Thanks
