Successful backups but restore not possible?

Hello. I have a client with a SBS 2011 server who has been using Windows backup to back up to an external USB disk. They've probably done a couple dozen successful restores in the past two years. Today we tried to restore files but the only backup listed is yesterday's. The GUI shows successful backups from the past week (and one failure). But Status -> All Backups -> View Details shows yesterday's successful backup, then jumps to last summer. I've tried to restore using the 'backup stored on another location' option and browsed to the backup disk with the same result. The external disk is 2 TB with about 75% free space and has been the backup target since last summer. Maximum Shadow Copy Storage space on the external USB disk is UNBOUNDED. Why does the backup show successful backups that cannot be restored?

Thanks.

Keith

Any way to throttle disk IO of Windows Server Backup

$

Windows Server Backup (on Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials with all latest updates) still maxes our disk IO during backup. Have 2x3Tb (as a Storage Space) SATA2 and 1x4Tb (split into 3 partitions) SATA3 being backed up to a 6Tb SATA3 disk. During backup, the media services are not accessible, and logon via remote terminal is so slow as to often timeout. File shares seem just about usable, at least sometimes.

Given the size of the backup, they typically take around 10 hours - making scheduling of these alongside the daily client backups as well as normal use of the server almost impossible! As the Windows Server Essentials Dashboard has very limited capability for scheduling backups (fixed at daily, and same items every day) this becomes extremely limited...

Is there a way to throttle the disk IO of the backup job - I have tried a number of utilities to set the IO priority to Low, but this effectively stops the backup :-(

If not, what is the best way to make a suggestion to Microsoft that the capability to limit disk IO needs to be added tothe Windows Server Backup tool (in a way that works with the Windows Essentials front-end).... and ideally, the Windows Server Essentials options for server backup should allow more flexible scheduling supporting more than one job and allowing frequency other than daily so that you could have e.g. weekly to backup the client backups, daily to backup shared folders and Windows 8.x history files...

We have a Windows 2012 standard server, and once we renamed the server, we started getting the following VSS errors - 8193, 22, and 12292.  How can I fix this?  The errors are listed below.  Thanks in advance!

Hi,

The Block Level Backup Engine Service service terminated unexpectedly.  It has done this 1 time(s).  The following corrective action will be taken in 120000 milliseconds: Restart the service.
I have tired restarting the Block Level Backup Engine Service service, deleting the backup catalogue, removing and re adding Window Server Backup feature. None of these fixed the problem.

I used Debug Diagnostic Tool v2.0 and capturing all instances of wbengine.exe process:

W2K8R2 VM-Guest or host-backups failing: VSS issue

Host: W2K12R2 fully patched (Hyper-V Role)

After adding a third IDE-disk to a running W2K8R2 (NTDS role) Guest Backups are failing (during backup for each disk there's a scsi disk mounted, vss-snapshot, that cannot be recognized, question to format this disk).

To narrow it I installed windows backup onto the guest trying to backup systemstate. After cleaning all vss isues, e.g. restarting the server all writers are stable.

Then doing the systemstate backup:

Unable to restore a backup to a new hard drive on PowerEdge T110

I have a PowerEdge T110 running Windows Server 2008 R2 Foundation.  I use the Backup feature built into Windows to create a Full backup of the machine.  When I restore this backup to a different Hard Drive, the machine starts, it passes the startup splash screen, a cursor appears, then the machine restarts.   I have used several other backup programs to clone the machine, but I have the same results.    I have used other Windows Server machines without issue.  Does Dell put an overlay on the drive?   What could be causing this issue, and how can I resolve it.   Thanks in advance.

I have a fresh server with Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 installed. Right after I installed the OS, I installed Windows Server Backup and ran one back up successfully. Since then, I've promoted the server to an Active Directory Domain controller. I'm no longer able to run Windows Server Backup successfully.

  • I've installed all available "Update for Windows Server 2008 R2 x64" updates (not any of the security ones)
  • In device manager all the attached hardware have drivers set up successfully
  • The secondary hard drive where I am trying to store the backup has 580 GB free space. The server's entire primary partition is only 460 GB.
  • The server's system partition status (where the OS is installed) is showing "System, Boot, Page File, Active, Crash Dump, Primary Partition"
  • I've uninstalled and re-installed Windows Server Backup
  • I have rebooted the server, and restarted the VSS service multiple times
  • When running Windows Server Backup, I choose only "Bare Metal Recovery"
  • I've tried both "VSS full backup" and "VSS copy backup" with no success
  • When I try to backup a single 1kb file, that fails with the same error

In the Windows Application logs I see the following errors when I attempt to do a backup:

  • lsass (508) Unable to read the header of logfile \\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy7\Windows\NTDS\edb.log. Error -546.
  • lsass (508) Unable to read the header of logfile \\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy7\Windows\NTDS\edb.log. Error -546.
  • A VSS writer has rejected an event with error 0x800423f4, The writer experienced a non-transient error.  If the backup process is retried,
the error is likely to reoccur.
. Changes that the writer made to the writer components while handling the event will not be available to the requester. Check the event log for related events from the application hosting the VSS writer.

Hi,

In windows 2008 R2 sp1 which is in a domain name xyz.com, we need to take the full backup to a shared folder in a NAS Drive which is in a workgroup ( not joined to the domain xyz)

When run the backuponce option in the windows server backup , it is getting backed up when the credentials for accessing the shared folder in a NAS Drive is provided during the time of backup.

But when scheduling the backup , I am getting the error as follows

I am using domain user id for scheduling the backup and other credentials to access the NAS shared folder

in other words how to get this option as below during the scheduling backup to exclude the above warning

Any help is greatly appreciated

Thanks & Regards S.Swaminathan Live & let others live!!!

Available backups on Windows 2008 and Windows 2012 server

Okay, my backups are running just fine on both servers.  The Windows 2012 box is a Hyper-V server also.  My problem is the amount of available backups on the Windows 2012 Server usually is between 1-2, while the Windows 2008 Server offers between 100-120.

The Windows 2012:

VSS Full Backup, System Reserve, C: (Full), E: (Incremental), Bare meta recovery, and system state.

I've noticed too that the Windows 2012 backup requires the complete C: drive, while the Windows 2008 Server does a "Full Server" backup, but does incremental backups of the C: volume, even though it is the system drive.

Hi,

Hopefully a simple question.  Can you use the built in backup utility in Windows Server 2012 to backup files and folders on that Windows Server to the cloud/azure

Thanks in advance.

Windows 8.1 x64 error 0x80070002 While System Restore

Today, I downloaded a file while Widows Defender was updating and it did not warn me about a virus. Now when I try to open Widows Defender, it says Windows cannot find 'C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MSASCui.exe' so I tried to restore. then when I click System Restore, it gives me Error 0x80070002. Also, when I try to find the file that caused all this, it shows up as an incomplete download then it deleted itself when I came back to my downloads folder.

Windows Server Backup Failing (0x8078014B)

The backup operation that started at '‎2014‎-‎08‎-‎21T12:54:43.220211800Z' has failed with following error code '0x8078014B' (There was a failure in creating a directory on the backup storage location.).

How can I fix this problem? I had changed the hostname of the server a few months ago and the backup software was keeping a copy of the whole hard drive with the old server name, which was causing backups to fail because of no space. I went in the WindowsImageBackup folder (Clicked continue to gain access) and deleted the folder with the name of the old server name. Then the problem started.

Our primary DPM server keeps shutting down unexpectedly with a BSOD error: BAD_POOL_HEADER caused by volsnap.sys+4dfd. All drivers are up-to-date and im not sure how to tackle this and stop it from happening since it's interfering with our backup jobs.  Please let me know if a mini dump file is needed to further investigate.  All help is appreciated.
