We have 3 2008 R2 servers and have noticed that files are not replicated during a full WSB, I have tested a file from ServerA and it did not replicate to ServerB while ServerB is being backed up, it does replicate to ServerC. A replication propagation test report from ServerA shows the test file to be incomplete. All servers are 100 % patched and running all hotfixes from Article ID: 968429 except 2663685. Can someone please help.

W2k8R2 Windows Backup -> BMR on different disk configuration -> How to move one parition of three parition to an other raid-disk?

Hello folks,

I need your help in following situation.

My source-system has 1 RAID5 (600GB) over 5 HDDs. On the RAID-Disk are one primary partition (250GB) and 1 extended partitions (350GB).

Because the hardware is out of support, I will migrate it to new hardware-server. I must minimized the downtime and the administrative effort. So I can't reinstall a new windows-installation, because 4 different software-licences are binding on SID. Additional a DFS-R is configured, so I need some hours to reconfigure it.

The new destination-system has one RAID1 (300GB) that I will use it for windows-system, and one RAID 6 (1TB) that is planed for data.

I has make a full backup (with all Critical) by using Windows Server Backup to a NAS storage. Than I has boot my destination system from Windows Server 2008 R2 media, and will make a recover. All Hard Disk is detected, after I install the storage-drivers. When I confirm the last step in windows-server-backup, windows-backup stop with error "Not enough space on harddisk 0"

How can I move the extended partition to harddisk 1 (RAID6) durring BMR??? I cann't exclude the volume in backup-procedure, because the DFS-R is installed with some share on this disk.

Has anyone a idea?

Best regards

"Compacting Virtual Disk(s)" on every backup

Our backups on our virtual windows server 2012 R2 which is hosted on Hyper-V server 2012 R2 have been taking at least 3 hours longer than they used to.
We use windows Server Backup for nightly backups which backs up to a local volume. We also use a powershell script for the weekly backup which also runs through wbadmin and backs up to a network share.
A couple weeks ago the backups started taking 3-5 hours longer.  I monitored them and noticed that they have been taking hours to compact the virtual hard disks at the end of the backups.
I refereed to the following link about this process and it should not be happening for every backup.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2524602/en-us

We installed windows updates after this problem began but its is still happening for every backup.

What can we do to stop this?

When I try to send PDF documents from my live mail to someone else's email, it doesn't go through and it gives me an error message. It doesn't happen all the time but it seems when a document is larger than 8 pages it wont go through. I would like to send documents that are larger than 8 pages. Is there some adjustments I can make to my computer to allow this?

2008R2 Server Image to Different Backup Server

We are considering imaging our current 2008R2 HP server with NovaBackup Business Essentials. This will allow us to restore to different hardware in case the primary server goes down for an extended time.

- are there issues with this?

- will 2008/r2 run on different hardware once the device drivers are installed?

we hope to get away from purchasing a 2nd Windows Server 2008R2 and CALs just to have it sit there.

Thanks.

VSS errors 8193, 22, and 12292

We have a Windows 2012 standard server, and once we renamed the server, we started getting the following VSS errors - 8193, 22, and 12292.  How can I fix this?  The errors are listed below.  Thanks in advance!

Error 8193 - Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error calling routine CoCreateInstance.  hr = 0x80040154, Class not registered

Error 22 - Volume Shadow Copy Service error: A critical component required by the Volume Shadow Copy service is not registered. This might happened if an error occurred during Windows setup or during installation of a Shadow Copy provider. The error returned from CoCreateInstance on class with CLSID {e579ab5f-1cc4-44b4-bed9-de0991ff0623} and Name IVssCoordinatorEx2 is [0x80040154, Class not registered

Daily Server 2012 backups to different drives

$

We have a Windows 2012 server that runs AD and Hyper-V with 2 VMs. Total disk space is 2TB. We have 5x 2TB USB disks that are rotated daily from Monday to Friday. Currently I have a scheduled task that fires off a batch file with the following in it:
wbadmin start backup -allcritical -systemstate -include:"c:" -backuptarget:E: -vssfull -quiet
WSB backup performance is currently set to "Normal backup performance".

The reason I went this route is because I had issues trying to get WSB to use all 5 drives in rotation through the GUI. Connecting all 5 drives at the same time when setting up the backup is just not feasible.

When I initially configured the backup it ran fine for the first 2 weeks whereby the backups would take about 16 hours to finish which was fine (starting at 6pm and finishing around 10am the next day). For some reason now the backups are taking around 26 hours to finish which I don't understand as the size of the data hasn't changed much.

I have now changed the performance to "Faster backup performance" but I'm not sure if it will work with the drives being changed daily as the comparison of say Monday's snapshot on the server will be different to the backed up data on Tuesday's drive. Or alternatively, if the comparison of changes is only done on the server and the differences are copied across, will it cause issues when trying to restore the backup?

Basically what I need to achieve is:
- The RPO is 1 day so that in the event of catastrophic failure we need to be able to restore the server completely to the previous day (obviously within reason of when the catastrophe occurred).
- We need 5 days worth of backups from Monday to Friday.
- Each drive is swapped out daily to be taken off site.

If I need to look at doing a full backup every weekend and leaving a single drive connected for the week for "incrementals" then I can discuss that with the managers but that would change the RPO to the previous week instead of the previous day if the building burns down for example.

Windows Backup Not Able to Recover Redirected Folders

$

Hello,

I have been doing a full system backup on a SBS 2011 using the Windows 2008R2 backup and the backups show complete. Today I went to look for a file in a redirected folder and the restore is blank. Apparently due to permissions. My questions are:

1. Why does Windows backup Show completed and give a false sense of security if it's skipping the redirected folders instead of displaying a directory not accessible error?

2. Does Backup run under LocalSystem, Administrator, the user that created the backup? Who do I have to grant access to user's desktop and Documents so that backup will back them up?

3. If the backups run under SYSTEM and the files have been backed up, how do I recover a file from a user's desktop folder?

Hyper-V 2012 server no Microsoft File Share Shadow Copy provider

$

Hi good people.

I have installed Hyper-V cluster using this scheme:

1 server - domain controller Windows Server 2012 Standard (Not R2) name DC

2 server - shared SMB3 storage Windows Server 2012 Standard (Not R2) name ST

3 server - backup server Windows Server 2012 Standard (Not R2) name BK

4 virtualization node 1 - Free Hyper-V 2012 server name HV1

5 virtualization node 2 - Free Hyper-V 2012 server name HV2

Shared storage ST has 2 shares: \\st\Quorum and \\st\Storage

Quorum is quorum share for cluster consistency and Storage for virtual machines.

On storage server installed File Server and VSS for file share agent roles. Shadow copy is enabled for hard disk with shares.

Cluster works perfect.

I want to implement backup solution for virtual machines in our cluster (altaro, veeam, dpm 2012 sp1 etc) but cant get VSS to work.

When I tried to use diskshadow to create backup from hyper-v node - I always get errors.

I have investigated the problem and found that the key is in Microsoft File Share Shadow Copy provider.

Actually there is no Microsoft File Share Shadow Copy provider on Free Hyper-V 2012 server. Not in clear installation not after update, even not after hyper-v cluster creation. I think this is some bug, because this vss provider is installed by default in every other windows 2012 server version - standard, datacenter, foundation ...

I can't find info how to add Microsoft File Share Shadow Copy provider to Hyper-V 2012, and I have copied binary fssprov.dll from windows server 2012 standard to hyper-v 2012 into c:\windows\system32 and then added appropriate registry keys from server 2012 standard:

Hi

I have one windows server 2008 named Server A

I have taken the backup of c drive including system state , efi partition to D drive of the same server A and after that found that D drive of the same server A has few program files and other folders in it.

So I have taken the backup of the D drive including the backup of the c drive to another  shared folder in Server B.

(Here, I cannot take the Full backup of the Server A to the Server B due to the space issue in Server B)

In situation when i need to restore the Server A , what will be the restoring procedure?

Any help is greatly appreciated

Thanks & Regards S.Swaminathan Live & let others live!!!

Windows 2012 R2 Update 1 (KB2919355) breaks VSS System Writer - CAPI2 Error

I have a server running Windows 2012 R2.  Since the installation of Windows 2012 R2 Update 1 (KB2919355), the VSS System Writer is missing.  When using "vssadmin list writers" from command prompt, the following error is displayed in the event log:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Log Name:      Application
Source:        Microsoft-Windows-CAPI2
Date:          28/08/2014 21:35:28
Event ID:      513
Task Category: None
Level:         Error
Keywords:      Classic
User:          N/A
Computer:      Server-RDS.domain.local
Description:
Cryptographic Services failed while processing the OnIdentity() call in the System Writer Object.

Details:
AddCoreCsiFiles : RtlConvertNtFilePathToWin32Path() failed.

System Error:
0xC0000039 (unresolvable).

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The server is not able to take a VSS snapshot during a backup which is a cause for concern.  Most forums suggest resetting permissions on the %windir%\winsxs\filemaps\ directory, which I have tried but does not resolve the issue.  I restored the server to the point before Update 1 was installed and the system writer was present, however as soon as Windows 2012 R2 Update 1 was installed, the writer no longer exists.  The only difference to this server compared to other Windows 2012 R2 servers which I have deployed (and Update 1 has installed no problems with no VSS writer issues), is that the user profiles have been moved to a different volume.  I suspect this is a permissions problems and although I have tried running the Sysinternals Process Monitor, I cannot see any permission problems when the VSS writers are called.

Does anyone have any suggestions.  Thanks in advance.
